I need new music. Any suggestions? I love bluegrass, celtic music, rap, old school country, hair metal, and (I know, I suck) light rock. I like most everything else, too. I’m just tired of what I’m listening to.
So, suggest something you love to me so I can listen to something new. Sending me said music is bonus points, not that I’d ever steal music or anything. More like borrow. I’ll give it back when I’m done, promise.

Area Code 615. Awesome bluegrass recording featuring my step-dad.

i just discovered a new band called Telfaire. They’re incredible! it’s hard to describe their style, but they kind of have a U2 meets John Mayer kind of thing going on…
definitely gotta check them out.

If you like REAL rock and roll (like the Stones, etc.) giev a listen to Franklin native Will Hoge. You can check him out at willhoge dot com and his MySpace page, myspace dot com/willhoge. I have a few other sites I can send you to if you like it. Let me know and enjoy!

I’m enjoying Josh Ritter right now. I really think it’s better music for winter, but there it is.

I’ve been on an 80s kick lately. Want any of that?
July 3, 2007 at 9:28 am
Gnarls Barkley and Amy Winehouse. Each a little throwback genre bending for interest.
Something scary and different–Gogol Bordello and Xavier Rudd. Ethnic and description defying.
I also pulled out some old Concrete Blonde earlier this week for some darker angst and howling.

I’m kinda diggin the Thicke guy. Allen Thicke? OR was that his dad from growing pains? heh. Either way he has a nice soul’ish bluesy sound. Sexy too. I’m also REALLY lovin’ me some Amy Whinehouse. And for some reason, I’m quite fascinated by Indie rock also. Oh, and I love country right now. I went thru about a 7 year phase where I hated it. But gimme some Carrie Underwood, Rascall Flatts, or Joedee Messina, and I”m all over it. Or how about some old school Beastie Boys? Hey…I think my taste in music is almost as eclectic as yours

I have Area Code 615 on vinyl from 20 years ago. Their version of “Lady Madonna” is the shiz-nit.
Have you listened to any of Robert Randolph and the Family Band? They call it Sacred Steel. It’s like the Allman Bros playing at church. Highly recommended by the Dry Spot!

I agree with Gogol Bordello! They (he?) rocks! First song you should download? “Start Wearing Purple.”
I listen to some slightly obscure music, but mostly anything that would/does play on Lightning 100.
My top 25 most played on my iPod right now (so I highly recommend):
Mika/Grace Kelly
Amos Lee/Shout Out Loud
Jonatha Brooke/Careful What You Wish For
Gomez/See The World
Brandi Carlisle/The Story
LeAnn Rimes/Nothin’ Better To Do
No Doubt/Spiderwebs
No Doubt/Don’t Speak
Aimee Mann/Today’s The Day
No Doubt/Just A Girl
Robert Randolph & The Family Band/Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With That
Save Ferris/Spam 9
The Ditty Bops/There’s A Girl
Kelly Clarkson/Since U Been Gone
The Shins/New Slang
Gabe Dixon Band/All Will Be Well
Ray LaMontage/Hold You In My Arms
The Postal Service/We Will Become Silhouettes
Frou Frou/Let Go
Amos Lee/Arms Of A Woman
Cary Brothers/Blue Eyes
Rachel Yamagata/Reason Why
The Damnwells/Graceless (really!!!)
Martin Sexton/Marry Me
Ray LaMontagne/Forever My Friend

Graceless-you indie hipster! Good choices though!
I third the Robert Randolph recommendations. The new album is funky and an interesting rock, soul, blues mix.
I like Gomez, but I have even gone so far as to e-mail L100 about over playing that song. There’s an entire album to choose from and they keep playing that same song 8 times a day. The Gomez song from American Beauty “We Haven’t Turned around” is my favorite.
Ivy-perhaps you should solicit playlists of people’s favorites and pick and choose from that.

This is Shauna’s friend Jessica in Chicago. I posted a mix CD to my LiveJournal friends list awhile ago, so if you log into your LJ account and follow the link under my name, you can download away and see if you like any of it. The songs are all in iTunes format, which I guess could be a problem if you don’t use iTunes. Next time I post a mix CD over there I’ll post in MP3 instead.
The things in my mix do not really match the genres you described at all, but maybe you will find something there you like. Or not. But I thought I’d point it out!

Also? 3hive.com is an excellent blog for finding free, legal MP3s. They basically review an artist and provide links to songs that artist is sharing so you can check them out. You can search their archives by genre or scroll through the huge list of artists they’ve reviewed to see if there’s something there you had wanted to check out.

Sara–
You are right, L100 has played that Gomez song a lot…
What’s funny is that I work in the record/radio industry and when I see a song getting played all the time like that, my mind immediately goes to “That record label has got a good promotion team!” They’re the ones who talk to the program directors at the radio stations and get them to play the music. And it just so happens that “See The World” was the single the label was working and trying to take to the top of the Triple A chart (which L100 happens to be a “reporting station” on…). The next single you’re going to get shoved down your throat from Gomez will be “Hamoa Beach.”
Working in the record/radio industry sucks, tho. Cause now I can’t listen to radio blissfully anymore. I think about what’s going on behind the scenes and I get distracted by what’s happening at the station. Oy.
I guarantee your email to L100 got forwarded on to Gomez’ label when their promotion people called up L100 and said, “Why are coming off that song??? Play more play more play more!” The peeps at L100 probably said: “HERE’S why we’re coming off it!” and sent them your email.
Oh the music industry… it’s my favorite spectator sport.

Try some eastmountainsouth. They have a site by that name. They’ve also split though, and the guy is Peter Bradley Adams, who’s now getting some solo airplay. Their one album is terrific; kind of a bluegrass/americana but with very modern instrumentation, and the songwriting is just awesome.
Also, try some Mindy Smith.

I recommend Night Ranger and old Mötley Crüe.
Thanks,
Tim

Also, I have a steel drum band cd that you can borrow.

Thank you SO much, everyone! I’m going to have plenty to listen to, this is awesome.

I highly recommend The Grascals. :>

Dropkick Murphys - irish boys kick some serious ass.
July 6, 2007 at 7:08 am
Oooh, John H is right - I think you would like Dropkick Murphys, and probably Flogging Molly as well.

Bluegrass: Ronnie McCoury’s solo album, although it’s a few years old, is stellar.
Celtic: Can’t go wrong with The Pogues. Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash might be worth a (re-?)listen.
Rap: Impeach the Precedent. Again, it’s a few years old, but it’s got some great grooves. It was the third in a series, the first two of which were entitled The Funky Precendent (vol.1 & vol.2).
Old School Country: Star Room Boys, Why Do Lonely Men and Women…. This was a newish act from Athens, GA playing old school. They only put out two albums, but they were both great. You might also try out Hot Club of Cowtown, if you like swing music at all. Dev’lish Mary was one of my faves of theirs.
Hair Metal: I am of no assistance here. Would you consider listening to Swedish prog-psych instead?
Light Rock: Oh, man. Have you ever heard The Bees? They’re this band from Nashville that are right in this mold. Starry Gazey Pie is just. The. Ticket.

I am currently listening to an odd hodge podge, everything from U2 (I LOVE the duet “One” between Bono and Mary J. Blige…have you ever heard it? It rocks, me thinks) to Jimmy Buffett, to old old B52s to Justin Timberlake.
