That’s right, kids, heathen and butthead are words that are firing offenses, if you are a subsitute teacher for them. Holland Employment (that’s the employment agency that hires and fires subs for Rutherford County schools) has fired William Lloyd, a man who has been a subsitute teacher for them for more than a decade.

Mr. Lloyd is a disabled gentleman- he has only one leg, and has recently recovered from a brain anyeurism- yet was working to (barely) support his family by subsitute teaching for Rutherford County Schools. Mr. Lloyd used the words heathen and butthead in reference to students, and was immediately fired for using those words. No warning, no suspension, nothing, just immediate termination.

Now, I know Mr. Lloyd personally, and I can just imagine how he used these words. It was probably something like, “If you heathens don’t quiet down, I’m going to have to” ummm, whatever teachers are now allowed to do to students who are misbehaving- not much, probably.

Has the school system become so politically correct that words like that are actual FIRING offenses? If so, the english teacher who taught me to LOVE writing would have been fired, she once bumped her head on the corner of a locker and her immediate reaction was to say, “Shit!” OMFGLOLWTF, a TEACHER said a BAD WORD! She should have been fired. Ah, but things were different, in the bad old days.

I have heard from many people what an awesome teacher Mr. Lloyd is. I never had the pleasure of having him for a teacher in any school (I’m too, ahem, old), but he has taught me many things about life and love and friendship.

My personal call to Rutherford County schools and Holland Employment:

Reinstate William Lloyd, you heathen buttheads!!!

Edit: This “horrible” incident took place at Oakland HIGH school. Yeah, because high school kids must NOT be exposed to such evil words as “butthead” and “heathen”.

Edit #2: This got linked to the Nashville is Talking site, which then got linked to FARK! Whoo hoo, and hello farkers. ;)

Edit #3: Some angry white guy weighs in on this issue.

Just one more edit: People that think Mr. Lloyd was calling kids heathens in a “You don’t go to church/are a christian/etc.” kind of way, not so, people! He’s not even a Christian! Calling a kid a heathen, at least in the lexicon I’m used to, means they’re acting uncivilized, like asshats. Personally, I like to refer to my kids as monkeys when they’re acting uncivilized. Maybe someone’ll fire me from this mothering gig for calling teh poor chyyyyyldrun names as mean as MONKEYS!

I’ve known Mr. Lloyd since 1988, and frankly the news that he’d been fired came as quite the shock to me. He has consistently attempted to educate children, both as substitute teacher and as a scout leader. While sometimes unorthodox in teaching (I remember he would use costumes on occasion to spice up History classes and keep student interest) I’ve noticed Mr. Lloyd has always managed to reach the students in ways that most teachers, let alone substitutes, never attain.

Not having been there to hear the context of these words that have apparently become unacceptable to the Holland Agency, I agree with your assumption of how they were probably applied. Considering these words are not considered obscene, I find it ludicrous to fire him over them. I hope the County and Holland come to their senses and reinstate Mr. Lloyd.

Well, heck fire, I call my kids heathens all the time! I have three and they can be buttheads at times, too.

    That’s truly sad.
